Candles with Western tools

Japanese candlesticks · Beginner → Intermediate · 8 min read
You will learn to
  • Build convergence: several reasons at one price
  • Combine candles with levels, retracements, averages, oscillators and volume
  • Avoid confusing a story with an edge

Convergence

Candles are strongest when they agree with independent evidence at the same price. The more different kinds of evidence line up, the better the reading:

  • Trendlines and support/resistance: a hammer on a rising trendline, a shooting star at a prior high.
  • Retracements: a bullish engulfing at the 50–61.8% retracement of the last swing up.
  • Moving averages: in an uptrend, a reversal candle at the 20 or 50 EMA pullback.
  • Oscillators: a bearish candle with bearish RSI divergence (price makes a higher high, RSI a lower high).
  • Volume: a reversal candle on the heaviest volume in weeks.
  • Measured moves: a target equal to the prior swing, used to check the reward is worth the risk.

A worked example

4H uptrend; price pulls back to the 61.8% retracement, which is also last week's high (old resistance → support) and the 50 EMA. A hammer forms there on rising volume, and the next candle closes above the hammer's high. Plan: long on that close, stop below the hammer's low, target the swing high (2.4R). Every element has a reason; the stop is where the reasons are proven wrong.

What our backtest found
Confluence zones (3+ reasons at one price) were tested as bounce entries: more confluence did not mean better results — all buckets were break-even or lost after fees. Convergence improves your reading and your stop placement; it does not create an edge on its own. A tested setup with a stop and a target does.
Checklist
☐ Higher timeframe trend agrees
☐ At least two independent reasons at the price
☐ Candle confirmed by the next close
☐ Stop where the reasons are proven wrong
☐ Target gives 1.5–2R after fees

Check yourself

1. Which is the strongest long setup?
  1. A hammer in mid-range
  2. A confirmed bullish engulfing at the 61.8% retracement in an uptrend, on rising volume ✓
  3. Three green candles after a huge rally
Trend, location, pattern, confirmation and volume agree.
2. What did the confluence backtest show?
  1. More reasons = better bounces
  2. More confluence did not improve results ✓
  3. Confluence doubled the win rate
Convergence helps reading and planning; it was not an edge by itself.
