Ranges, breakouts and fakeouts

Market structure & liquidity · Intermediate · 7 min read
You will learn to
  • Trade ranges differently from trends
  • Tell a breakout from a fakeout
  • Use the retest

Markets range most of the time

Strong trends are the exception. In a range, the edges are support and resistance and the middle is noise. Trend tools (moving average crosses, breakouts) lose money in ranges; range tools (fading the edges) lose money in trends. Knowing which state you are in is half the work.

Breakout or fakeout?

More likely a real breakoutMore likely a fakeout
Close well beyond the edge, large bodyWick beyond, close back inside
Volume clearly above averageVolume flat or lower
In the direction of the higher-timeframe trendAgainst it
After a squeeze (narrowing range)After an already-extended move

The retest entry

Instead of buying the breakout candle, many traders wait for price to come back to the broken edge (role reversal) and hold it. Entries are later but the stop is tighter and logical: back inside the range means the breakout failed.

NexusCore's triangles and channels count a close outside the pattern as the confirmation; on 4H those were part of the +0.24R chart-pattern result. Ascending triangles +0.85R and falling channels +0.69R were promising but on small samples.

1. Price closes above a range top on low volume, against the daily downtrend. Most likely…
  1. A strong breakout
  2. A fakeout risk is high ✓
  3. A guaranteed reversal
Low volume and against the bigger trend are both fakeout signs.
2. What invalidates a breakout-retest long?
  1. A close back inside the range ✓
  2. A red candle
  3. Price touching the edge
Back inside means the breakout failed.
