Crypto trades on macro

Large crypto moves often coincide with US economic data: interest-rate decisions (FOMC), inflation (CPI, PCE), jobs (Non-Farm Payrolls). These arrive at fixed times, mostly 12:30 or 18:00 UTC, and can move Bitcoin several percent in minutes, with spreads widening and stops slipping.

A simple policy

  • Know when high-impact releases are due before you trade.
  • Do not open a fresh position in the 30 minutes before one; consider reducing size or moving stops into profit on open trades.
  • Do not trade the first spike: the initial move often reverses as the details are digested.
  • Exchange-specific news (hacks, listings, ETF decisions) can hit without warning — another reason to size small.
The calendar chip in the top bar and the News tab list this week's high-impact US events; the Trade Brief switches to CAUTION from 30 minutes before to 30 minutes after one, and the app warns 30 minutes ahead.

1. A CPI release is due in 10 minutes. A sensible default is…
  1. Open a big position to catch the move
  2. No new positions until it has passed ✓
  3. Remove all stops
Spreads widen and the first spike is unreliable.
